Castle day
10.00 – 16.00
Hofwijck
On Whit Monday, the Huygens Museum at Hofwijck will open its doors for Castle Day, with this year’s theme being ‘Love’. Set off on a journey of discovery through the Hofwijck garden and be surprised in every corner by a little bit of love: for one another, for nature, and for art and history. With a special ticket booklet, children can embark on an adventure featuring all sorts of fun activities.
Love is everywhere at Hofwijck, the former country estate of poet and diplomat Constantijn Huygens. He had a great love for his garden, which he celebrated in his famous court poem Hofwijck. His love for his wife, Suzanna van Baerle, whom he affectionately called ‘Sterre’ in his poems, also resonates here. During Castle Day, young visitors can discover this story in a playful way.
Activities
How do you express love in words? Listen to poems in special spots around the garden. Felt inspired yourself? Write a card to someone you love. With the special Huygens Museum stamp, you can pop it straight into the post. Scattered throughout the garden, you’ll also find various traditional Dutch games that young and old can play together.
The Hofwijck garden is in full bloom in spring. Did you know that many flowers have a hidden meaning? For example, a yellow tulip symbolises friendship and a daffodil a new beginning. Do you know what all the flowers stand for? Choose a flower yourself to give to someone as a gift.
Practical information
The activities are suitable for the whole family. A special discounted rate applies on this day: children up to the age of 18 pay €2.50 (including a multi-visit ticket) and adults €7.50. Tickets are available at the ticket office on the day.
The activities will take place at the Hofwijck site of the Huygens Museum (Westeinde 2A, Voorburg). Opening hours: Monday 25 May, 10.00–16.00. In the event of bad weather, the activities will be moved indoors.
